The Call of Duty

There was a time on earth where battles fought by men were with shield and sword. A time when men’s honor and the community’s safety rested upon their skill with these weapons. Men and men alone were sworn to defend all that they held dear. These were hard times of harsh realities and a focused ambition. Fathers knew that the survival of their families depended upon how well they performed on the battlefield and how well they taught their children to defend themselves against enemies who sought to disrupt peace and that which was good. Their battlefield was chosen for them and their mission was clear; they were the protectors and defenders in an untamed land where evil roamed the earth.

Today battles fought by the majority of men are not with sword and shield. Contemporary weapons men often use today are things like computers and email blasts, grudges and revenge business deals, slander and hasty spending, long hours at the office, arguments with their wife and children or one of many addictions. Times are still hard and there are plenty of harsh realities for each of us to have our fair share. Have we forgotten a simple truth in the midst of the battle? As fathers we must be reminded that we are still the first line of offense and defense for our families. Their well-being and honor is highly influenced by our skill on the battle field of life.
